The Capstone Corner Fall 2010 (2010-10-08)

MPPA students are working on projects in Okolona and Crawford this semester in addition to individual ventures examining the sale of synthetic marijuana in Mississippi and the state's trends in personnel management.

Ph.D. student Kesha Perry helps oversee the projects along with Dr. Jeff Markham and Dr. Marty Wiseman of the Stennis Institute of Government.

This semester focuses on how Mississippi municipalities are taking measures to overcome the national economic downturn. Projects help local administrations continue operations in a declining economic environment.

Check out the Fall 2010 lineup:

Okolona

The first group will write an efficiency and effectiveness report for the city. The report gauges the city's productivity in terms of administrative and departmental operations.

MPPA Team: Corey Brown, Chintan Desai and Chara Singleton

The second group will use this report to apply for grant funding for the Okolona Forward Project. The project will work with local groups on an integrative history about the civil war and civil rights. MPPA students will work with the National Council of Negro Women and the Friends of the Battle of Okolona in the grant proposal.

MPPA Team: Julie Duke, Deneshia Harlson and Lindsey Lemmons Smith

Crawford

This MPPA group will use Crawford's arts and entertainment focus to create a mini-documentary. The area hails American Delta blues guitarist Big Joe Williams and NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.

Students are also exploring the town's ability to close the digital divide.

MPPA Team: Dexter McKinney, Robbie Ward and Thomas Jameson

Synthetic Marijuana

MPPA student Kate Jacobson will examine grassroots efforts to ban the use of synthetic marijuana (aka "spice") in Mississippi municipalities.

Trends in Personnel Management

MPPA student Yolanda Cowley will update a 1994 Stennis report that examines Mississippi's state and government administration, focusing on demographic trends and the future of state government.
