Do Right, Do Good, Do Well: Seeing the Bigger Picture of the Mississippi State University's Day One (2012-03-07)

Kesha Perry, Project Manager with the Stennis Institute of Government and Community Development and doctoral student in public policy and administration, along with Dr. Cade Smith, Director of the Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement, presented their research on the Day One program at the 2012 American Political Science Association Teaching and Learning Conference in February. The study, "Do Right, Do Good, Do Well: Seeing the Bigger Picture of the Mississippi State University's Day One Leadership Program," examined the program's first two full years (2008 and 2009) to measure its impact on students' ability to lead and participate in civic and political engagement. The program is designed to maximize students' talents and abilities through team-based, student-led service learning projects. Students are partnered with a designated Community Partner (CP) during their first semester. This leadership opportunity exposes students to leaders across varying sectors, including but not limited to, business, community/economic development, politics, and nonprofits.
